Hey Quaranturnt Crew,
A lot of you told me your goals are related to cutting some fat. Not surprising, everyone from those with 40% bodyfat down to those with 9% are comparing their leanness and definition to someone impossibly lean (I’m coming for you Chris 😡). If you feel lost about how to go about changing your composition, reach out and I’d be happy to help! For now, I’ll give you a few of my takes over the next couple days. It starts with Revving The Engine. Imagine you are driving a car, and it has a constant trickle of fuel flowing into the gas tank. You’re driving at 5mph (8km/h for the South African friends). Now, let’s say you want to get the gas tank down to empty. Are you going to start by cutting down that inflow of gas? Or would you start by revving the engine to 60mph, then cut off the gas? Even if you straight kill the inflow of gas, you’ll be going for days at 5mph. Rev that freakin engine, then control the inflow. You’ll win this arbitrary game within a couple hours. You: “But Mark, why are we talking about cars?” Your body is the car, and you can control how much you’re eating (the fuel inflow), but you can also control your metabolic rate (the energy needed to operate your body - aka your car’s speed). If you’re sadly eating 1500 calories a day, do you really think cutting it down to 1400 is going to help? No. You should build your body up to use 2x the calories per day, and then we can pull back your caloric intake to get that engine burning hot and cut your bodyfat gas tank down to size. Change how your body works before you start “dieting”. Tomorrow, I’ll discuss what it means to Rev Your Engine. This week we have a new section making an appearance. For just this week I’ll include a 3 minute exercise for breath practice. “But Mark I already know how to breath.” Ya ok, you’re not dead, but that doesn’t mean you have mastered breath. Especially now, in a time of a lung-debilitating virus, let’s appreciate the breaths we have and build strength in our respiratory system. Check out the IG post here!
